Day 14: Bangladesh and Macheer jhol

Day 14: Bangladesh and Machher Jhol. Tonight we were going to Bangladesh with a dish coming from a country I shamefully admit I know very little about.

Machher jhol is a traditional fish stew in Bangladesh and comes in infinite variations. There seems to be no limit to what you can add into the stew, as long as it contains a lot of spices and chillies, fish and potatoes. Most of the time it is accompanied with plain white rice.
It is the first dish in this challenge that resembles a curry. It was delicious! As a big fan of spicy foods and curries in general, I must say that I would very much like to try this dish in Bangladesh someday.

Here’s a recipe to follow along:


1 small onion,minced

2 potatoes

5 green chilies

2 tbsp coriander seeds

1 fish (ideally rohu, I used mackerel)

3 tbsp vegetable oil

1 tsp cumin seeds



steamed rice to serve

Cut the fish into small pieces. If you are using a whole fish, clean it first and remove its head. Rub the fish with salt and turmeric.

Proceed with peeling the potatoes and cutting them into pieces. Cut the chilies into slices.

Roast the coriander and cumin seeds in a pan until fragrant. Grind them into a paste by adding a little water.

Now heat the oil in a pot and add the pieces of fish to the pot. Cook on both sides for a few minutes. Remove from the pot and set aside. Now add the potatoes and stir fry for several minutes. Add the onion, chilies and keep on frying.

Add the cumin and coriander paste to the pot. Add 2 cups of water and bring to the boil. Now reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Season with salt and add the fish and cook for another couple of minutes.

Serve with rice.
